Terms of Use

Welcome to Photosites. These terms explain how the site works, what you can expect from us, and what we ask of you. We've tried to keep them in plain English. If anything is unclear, just contact us.

Photosites is operated by Corey Potter ("Photosites," "we," "us"). By using photosites.com, including any Photosites subdomain, you agree to these terms. If you don't agree, please don't use the site.

1. What Photosites is

Photosites is a searchable directory that helps people find photographers. Each listing gives a short overview of a photographer's business, such as their name, location, specialties, and a few sample photos, and points visitors to the photographer's own website.

Your website stays the main destination. We help people find it.

2. How listings are created

There are two kinds of listings:

  • Listings photographers create themselves. A photographer signs up, verifies they run the business, and builds their own profile.
  • Listings we create from public information. Our team may create a listing from information a photographer has published on their public website, such as business name, location, specialties, public contact details, social links, and a few photos. These listings stay unclaimed until the photographer claims them.

When we collect information and photos from a photographer's website to build a listing:

  • Our crawler, PhotositesBot, identifies itself with the user agent PhotositesBot/1.0 (+https://photosites.com/bot).
  • We check the site's robots.txt before we fetch a page or image, and we stop if PhotositesBot isn't allowed. If we can't read robots.txt, we stop.
  • We stop if a page or image we fetch says noai or noimageai in a robots meta tag or an X-Robots-Tag header.
  • We don't add listings for domains on our do-not-add list (see section 9).
  • For each portfolio photo we collect, we keep a record of where it came from, when we fetched it, and how it was added.

3. Claiming your listing

If you find a listing for your business, you can claim it for free. To protect listings from impersonation, we ask you to show you run the business. Depending on the listing, you can do this by:

  • adding a DNS record to your website's domain,
  • entering a code we email to an address at your website's domain,
  • signing in with a verified email address that matches the one already on the listing, or
  • sending a photo of yourself holding a code we give you, which our team reviews by hand.

Once your claim is verified, the listing is yours to manage from your dashboard. We may review your profile before it appears in the directory again.

4. Your account

  • You need an account to claim or manage a listing. Sign-in is handled by our authentication provider, Clerk.
  • You must be at least 18 years old, and old enough to enter a binding contract where you live, to create an account or buy a plan.
  • Please give us accurate information and keep your login secure. You're responsible for activity on your account.
  • Only create or claim a listing for a business you own or are authorized to represent.
  • If you'd like your account deleted, email us at corey@photosites.com.

5. What owners can do (and what we ask)

When you've claimed your listing, you can:

  • edit most of your profile details,
  • add, reorder, and delete your photos,
  • hide your listing from your dashboard. It comes off the directory, and your profile, photos, and account stay put. If you'd like it back, contact us.
  • delete your listing from your dashboard. This removes your profile, your photos, and their stored image files, and adds your website's domain (if one is on file) to our do-not-add list so we won't re-add it. We'll email you a confirmation.
  • use any paid features on your plan.

If you don't see the hide or delete options in your dashboard, contact us and we'll help.

We ask that you:

  • only upload photos you own or have the right to share,
  • make sure the people in your photos are comfortable being shown publicly, as you would for your own portfolio,
  • keep your information truthful and up to date (no fake reviews, misleading prices, or claims you can't back up), and
  • only post content that's lawful and doesn't infringe anyone's rights.

We may review, edit for formatting, hide, or remove content that breaks these terms or the law.

6. Community rules

Please don't:

  • Misuse "Suggest an edit." This link on unclaimed listings is for honest corrections and genuine concerns about a photo. Don't use it to harass anyone, flood us with requests, or target a competitor. It's protected by bot checks and rate limits.
  • Make false ownership claims. Don't try to claim, remove, or change a listing for a business that isn't yours, and don't fake DNS records, emails, or photos.
  • Scrape or copy the directory in bulk, or use automated tools in a way that overloads the site.
  • Copy photographers' images from Photosites. They belong to the photographers.
  • Break the law or infringe anyone's rights, including copyright, privacy, and publicity rights.
  • Interfere with security, including our bot checks and rate limits.

We may limit, suspend, or close accounts that break these rules.

7. Paid plans

Some features are paid.

  • Plans and prices are shown before you buy and at checkout.
  • Payments are handled by Stripe on its secure checkout page. We never see or store your full card number.
  • Renewal. Paid plans are subscriptions that renew each billing period until canceled.
  • Managing your plan. You can manage your subscription through Stripe's billing portal, linked from your dashboard. If you need help canceling, email us.
  • Upgrades. If you move to a higher plan, Stripe adjusts your charges for the rest of the billing period.
  • Coupons. If you use a coupon code, its discount is shown at checkout.
  • Refunds. If you have a question about a charge or would like a refund, contact us.

Being on a paid plan doesn't change our editorial standards or these terms.

8. Photos and copyright

You keep your copyright. Always. Being listed on Photosites never transfers ownership of your photos to us.

Here's how we handle photographers' images:

  • Credit and a link back. Photos we collect for unclaimed listings are credited to the photographer and link back to their website or the page where we found the photo. Photos you upload yourself don't carry that credit link, and once you claim your profile, you control how your photos are presented.
  • Smaller copies. When we collect a portfolio or profile photo for a listing, we save a resized copy no larger than 1,200 pixels on its longest side. Photos you upload yourself are saved at up to 2,000 pixels. Either way, we remove location (GPS) data and other camera metadata from the saved copy, and keep the copyright and artist fields if the photo has them.
  • Deleting means deleting. When a photo is deleted, its stored image file is deleted too. When a listing is deleted, its profile and portfolio photo files are deleted.

Our pledge on AI:

  • We do not use photographers' images to train AI models.
  • We do not sell or license photographers' images to anyone.
  • Some features use AI to help with text, such as drafting a short business description. Those features send text only to AI providers, never image files.
  • Public profile pages can be read by search engines and AI assistants, like any public web page.

Permission you give us. When you upload photos or content, or claim a listing, you give us a limited, non-exclusive, royalty-free permission to store, resize, and display that content on Photosites, and in links and previews that point back to Photosites (for example, when someone shares your listing), so we can run the directory. This permission ends when you delete the content or your listing, except for anything we need to keep by law.

9. Removing a listing

We want this to be easy for real owners and hard to abuse.

  • If you've claimed your listing, you can hide or delete it from your dashboard (see section 5).
  • If your listing is unclaimed, open "Suggest an edit" on the profile and choose "This is me — remove my listing." You'll confirm you own the website with a DNS record or a code sent to an email address at your website's domain. You can also claim the listing first and then delete it.
  • Once you've verified, we delete the listing's photo files, hide the listing from Photosites, and add your domain to our do-not-add list. We won't re-add listings for domains on that list.
  • You can also block our crawler before a listing exists. See photosites.com/bot.

We ask for proof of ownership because otherwise anyone could ask us to remove a competitor. If your listing has no website on file, or you can't use DNS or a domain email, contact us and we'll help.

Anyone who believes a listing infringes their copyright can also send a notice under our Copyright Policy.

10. Other people's websites

Listings link to photographers' own websites and social profiles. We don't control those sites and aren't responsible for them. Any booking, contract, or payment between you and a photographer is between you and them.

11. Disclaimers

We work hard to keep listings accurate, but much of the information comes from public sources and from photographers themselves. So:

  • Photosites is provided "as is" and "as available." To the extent the law allows, we don't make promises, express or implied, about the site, including that it will be error-free or always available, or that listings are complete or current.
  • We don't endorse any particular photographer, and a listing isn't a guarantee of quality. Please do your own research before hiring anyone.
  • Reviews and ratings are the opinions of the people who wrote them.

12. Limitation of liability

To the extent the law allows:

  • We aren't liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or for lost profits, revenue, or data, arising from your use of Photosites.
  • Our total liability for any claim relating to Photosites is limited to the greater of (a) the amount you paid us in the 12 months before the claim or (b) $100.

Some places don't allow these limits, so they may not all apply to you.

13. Indemnity

If you break these terms or the law while using Photosites, or upload content you don't have the right to share, and someone makes a claim against us because of it, you agree to cover our reasonable costs from that claim, including reasonable legal fees. We'll let you know about the claim and give you a chance to take part in how it's handled.

14. Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of South Carolina, USA, without regard to its conflict-of-law rules. Any dispute will be handled in the state or federal courts located in South Carolina, and you and we agree to those courts' jurisdiction. Before filing anything, please contact us first. Most problems can be solved with a conversation.

15. Changes to these terms

We may update these terms as Photosites grows. When we do, we'll change the "Last updated" date above. If a change is significant, we'll give reasonable notice, for example by email to account holders or a notice on the site. If you keep using Photosites after a change takes effect, you're agreeing to the updated terms.

16. Other legal bits

  • If any part of these terms can't be enforced, the rest still applies.
  • If we don't enforce a term right away, we haven't given up the right to enforce it later.
  • These terms, our Privacy Policy, and our Copyright Policy are the whole agreement between you and us about Photosites.
